Braemar Howells Response Team mobilises to Gibraltar

October 2008

Saturday the 11th October saw some of the worst weather experienced in Gibraltar in living memory. As a result of the weather, the Bulk Carrier, Fedra, got into difficulties and eventually floundered off of Europa Point in Gibraltar. Although unladen with cargo, the vessel had onboard a quantity of bunker fuel and posed an environmental threat to the small territory of Gibraltar.

Upon hearing the news of the floundering, Braemar Howells immediately mobilised a response team to assist the authorities of Gibraltar in any way they could. Familiar with the area through previous projects, the team commenced Offshore Recovery Operations within the Port area.

A second team was mobilised two days later to design and build a Decontamination Facility to receive any contaminated equipment resulting from the incident. This team drew on the huge experiences gained in similar activities undertaken during the MSC Napoli incident of 2007.
